Virgin Active Chiang Mai will be the city’s largest and most modern workout facility, offering its members a spacious 2,000 square metre venue with four dedicated exercise studios, state-of-the-art gym equipment and over 200 group exercise classes a week

THAILAND, 14 March 2018 – International health and fitness club operator Virgin Active Fitness Clubs looks set to excite the lives of residents in northern Thailand with the upcoming launch of Virgin Active Chiang Mai, its latest high-end fitness club to be built since it began reshaping Thailand’s health and fitness industry in 2014.

When Virgin Active Chiang Mai opens its doors on 17 March, it will redefine the way of life for many of Chiang Mai’s residents as they begin working out in a premium and sophisticated fitness facility with a vast 2,000 square metre floor space, complete with the same facilities that have become synonymous with the Virgin Active brand, such as the Mind & Body Studio, Ride Studio and High Energy Studio, where more than 200 innovative and exciting group exercise programmes and classes are conducted each week.

Located in the popular Lanna Futuristic-styled Central Festival Chiang Mai, Virgin Active Chiang Mai is Virgin Active’s first club to be opened outside of Bangkok and is also its only club in South East Asia to have a dedicated Boxing Studio. The club is Virgin Active’s seventh to be launched in Thailand and will help the city of Chiang Mai move the needle as it sheds its image as an idyllic artisanal centre of history and culture to become a bustling cosmopolitan hub of the future

“Expanding outside of Bangkok has always been a goal of ours,” said Christian Mason, Managing Director, South East Asia, Virgin Active, when asked to comment on Virgin Active’s decision to open a club in Chiang Mai. “People today are becoming savvier when it comes to health and fitness. They are looking for services, experiences and workouts that offer not just the best value for money, but also ‘speak’ to them. Yet these were sorely missing in Chiang Mai, home to some of the world’s best Muay Thai fighters. We saw this as an opportunity to enter the market, to deliver to the residents of Chiang Mai a workout venue that does not simply match what gyms in Bangkok can offer, but far exceeds peoples’ expectations of what a gym can and should be.”

“Having operated for some time in Asia, we believe there is huge scope to introduce the premium, high-end fitness clubs that Virgin Active specialises in to provide a luxury experience, a broad offer of facilities and a highly innovative group exercise programme, which has already proved successful in the region,” he added.

Vutravee Charuvatana, Country Manager, Thailand, Virgin Active shared: “Virgin Active views fitness and health holistically, and we believe in being part of our members’ journeys to living a healthy lifestyle. The residents of Chiang Mai can look forward to receiving a luxurious and personal one-stop multi-fitness experience every time they walk through our doors. Just like all of our clubs in Bangkok, Virgin Active Chiang Mai has been designed to be a venue where members can exercise, relax and even socialise with each other, underpinned by our distinct brand of warm and personable service.”

Despite being a new entrant into Chiang Mai’s health and fitness industry, there has been phenomenal interest in Virgin Active from the residents of Chiang Mai, as evidenced by the success of several free outdoor group exercise classes Virgin Active had organised since December last year, with attendance numbers going into the hundreds. These events also gave the residents of Chiang Mai a little taste of what to expect from Virgin Active, in the lead-up to the opening of Virgin Active Chiang Mai.

Part of Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group, Virgin Active opened its first club in 1999 and now has close to 240 clubs worldwide, with a presence in four continents and eight countries. Positioning itself as the leader in health and fitness trends, Virgin Active has been amongst the first to introduce new trends as well as boutique-style experiences and workouts that were either developed by its global innovations team or in partnership with international fitness personalities and brands. These include group exercise classes that are proprietary to Virgin Active (e.g. GRID, H.E.A.T) or were exclusively launched by Virgin Active (e.g. Les Mills’ THE TRIPÔ).

To celebrate the opening of its seventh club Virgin Active Chiang Mai, Virgin Active is running a month-long promotion this March, where all new members who sign up for a 12-month membership at any club in both Bangkok and Chiang Mai will receive four weeks off their membership dues.
